LINK - the UNIQUE CHARITY!

In 2011, the Oxted & District LINK organisation was very proud to be awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services to the Community, (which is the equivalent of an MBE for an individual).

Why unique?

Well, unusually, LINK does not actually seek large inputs of cash by way of donations. (But it does help of course!).

What it does need, however, are volunteers!

LINK is a registered Charity (No 266988) and was founded forty years ago with the express intention of providing a Community Service for those in the RH8 postal area, who, for whatever reason, cannot use public transport. But it does not run by magic.

However efficient it is in maintaining a list of volunteers to do all the jobs required more are always needed to maintain its momentum.

TELEPHONE VOLUNTEERS

There is a LINK telephone volunteer on duty on 01883-713333 from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday – Friday, and 9.00 to 11.00 a.m. on Saturdays to take requests for help. Telephone volunteers operate from their home on a rota of one day every six weeks. Telephone expenses may be claimed. To discuss what is involved, please phone 01883 713333

DRIVING LINK

A team of volunteers drive those residents of RH8 who, for whatever reason, are unable to access public transport. Some drivers work to a rota of one morning or afternoon every two weeks and others are available for occasional driving. A petrol mileagemay be claimed.

Anybody who feels able to become involved by offering their time for just a few hours a week or month should call 01883 713333.

THE LINK PORTER TRUST

In 1992, following the receipt of a legacy to Link from the late Raymond Porter, a trust fund was established to help people in the RH8 who were facing short-term problems/crises.

Once a grant is made, and it is never in the form of cash, the trustees would expect that the applicant would be ‘back on track’. Hence long term debts are not usually considered.

The Trustees prefer applications to be supported by an organisation or person aware of the applicant’s circumstances, such as CAB, Social Services, a local Councillor or local church. Application forms can be obtained from the Trust’s secretary, Judy Bunn, on 01883-723370.
